Coimbatore : Coimbatore is all set to host the 36th Youth National Basketball Championship (under 16) after 57 long years, here at the Indoor Stadium in PSG College of Technology from May 14 to 21. The tournament is featuring teams from 25 states across the country. About 700 players and 60 top jurors from various states in the country will take part in the tournament.

The tournament is featuring teams from 25 states across the country. About 700 players and 60 top jurors from various states in the country will take part in the tournament.

The tournament is being organised by the National Basketball Federation along with the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association and Coimbatore District Basketball Association for boys and girls, under the age category of 16 years. Earlier, Coimbatore hosted the first National Basketball Championship in the year 1962. Last year, the Youth National Basketball Championship was held at Rajasthan where Tamil Nadu secured a bronze medal.

Addressing the press, Adhav Arjunan, the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association said that Coimbatore had always impressed with top quality games. "Coimbatore is very active in this sport and has been next only to Chennai in producing quality players. So to take the game to other districts and the rural part of the State, the Association decided to commence this tournament in the city."

Arrangements have been made for the players' boarding and lodging at the PSG College of Technology. L Gopalakrishnan, the Managing Trustee of PSG Charity Institutions will be inaugurating the tournament with Govindaraj, President of the Indian Basketball Federation presiding over the event. About 13 lakh cash rewards will be presented to the winners of the tournament. The best performing players in the tournament will be selected to represent the Indian basketball team.
