Gomathi, Tajinder open India's gold medal tally at Asian Athletics Championship

Gomathi Marimuthu opened India’s gold medal tally at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar with a superb finish in the women’s 800m final, recording a personal best timing of 2:02.70 seconds.

Behind Gomathi, Wang Chunyu of China finished second (2:02.96) while Margarita Mukasheva of Kazakhstan finished third.

Gomathi who was pushed back in the first lap came back very strongly in the final lapse going past the other two top contenders. Gomathi edged past Chunyu and clinched the gold in a terrific final stretch run. "I did not realise until I crossed the finish line that I had won a gold medal. The last 150m was a very tight race,” gushed Gomathi. 

Gomathi, who had finished seventh in the Asian Championship in 2013 and fourth in 2015 has now secured India’s first gold medal at Doha. 

In the shot put final, Tajinder’s first attempt was easily his best to ensure gold was his, putting India on top of the podium.

Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani brought in more laurels for the nation by winning silver medals in their respective categories with their superb efforts.

Jabir MP won the Men’s 400m hurdles bronze medal with a personal best of 49.13 secs, thus qualifying for the World Championship. Another bronze was won by Saritaben Gayakwad in the women’s 400m hurdles with a timing of 57.22 seconds.
