Coimbatore: N Gaayathri, 19, from Coimbatore has won an individual bronze medal and a team gold medal in junior world cup shooting championship held in Suhl in Germany two days ago. She won the bronze medal in the 50 metre rifle prone women junior individual event. Gaayathri hopes to participate in the Olympics in 2020.
She is a second year B.com (computer application) student at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women. She started practising at Coimbatore rifle club in 2009. "I am very interested in shooting and worked hard to get where I am. I am glad to have represented the country and win a bronze medal in the World Cup," she said.
Her father Nithyanandam and mother Kanchana are engaged in the motor pump manufacturing business in Coimbatore. Gaayathri had participated in a state-level shooting championship held at Madurai in 2012 and won two gold medals, one silver and a bronze. She also won nine gold medals, four silver medals, one bronze medal and six team medals in a state shooting championship held in Coimbatore.
In 2014, she set three new state records at a shooting championship held at Chennai and won three gold, as many silver and two bronze medals. The same year, she set four new state records at a shooting championship held in Madurai.
"As of now, the Olympics has 50 metre rifle prone event for men only. The international federation has submitted a proposal to form a mixed team in the category for the 2020 Olympics games. I hope to participate and win gold medals for our nation," said Gaayathri. She has won 96 medals since 2009.
