Mar Ivanios College and Hindustan University crowned champions of All India Inter-college Basketball Tournament

Coimbatore : Mar Ivanious College, Thiruvananthapuram and Hindustan University, Chennai emerged champions in the sixth All India Inter-college Basketball tournament 'JASA 2019' organised by the Jayalakshmi Sports Academy, here at Nehru Stadium on Sunday.

About 20 teams comprising of 8 men's team and 12 women's team actively participated in the tournament in which Mar Ivanious college from Kerala lifted the V.R. Kumaravel Memorial trophy in the men's category and Hindustan University emerged champions in the women's category for the Jayalakshmi Memorial Trophy.



 The tournament was conducted under the league basis and top basketball teams from various parts of South India vied for the trophy. In the men's category Mar Ivanious College and Jeppiar Institute of Technology (JIT) Chennai clashed in the finals of the tournament. The match was a cliffhanger in which Mar Ivanious College edged JIT by just two points to lift the trophy, with the scoreline reading 76-74. Jesine Mathew of Mar Ivanious was picked as the best player of the tournament.



Similarly, in the women's category, the Hindustan University, Chennai sealed MOP Vaisnav College Chennai at 65-50 in the finals of the tournament to take home the Jayalakshmi Memorial trophy. Parthibapriya of Hindustan was awarded the best player of the tournament award.



Cash prizes of Rs.50000 was presented to the winners of both the men's and women's category. The first and second runners-up of the tournament were presented with Rs.25000 and 10000 respectively. 

G Selvaraj, JMD- CRI Groups and the President of Coimbatore District Basketball Association was the Chief Guest at the prize distribution and distributed the prizes to the winners of the tournament. Dr. Nirmala Kumari, President of Jayalakshmi Sports Academy was also present at the prize distribution.
