Six year old sets national record in Quarter Skating

Six-and-a-half year old Darshini has her name etched in the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Record for completing the Quarter Skating Marathon. This morning, Darshini set the world record in speed skating in the under-seven category, completing the total distance of 10.5-kilometres in 41.03 minutes.

Darshini began skating when she was in her lower kindergarten. Her parents made arrangements for her to train under a coach and since then, Darshini has been practicing roller skating.

For the past six months however, this student of Yuvabharathi Public School, Kanuvai, has been training real hard under coach Thangadurai to enter the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Record.

Flagged off by Manmohan Rawat, Managing Editor of India Book of Records, Darshini was cheered by her friends and well wishers throughout the route. At no time, did she loose her concentration.

The Tamil Nadu Speed Skating Association (TNSSA) general secretary Muruganandam said that it was a first-of-its-kind in Asia where a girl under-seven has set a world record. "It was my dad and mom Uma Maheswari, who noticed my interest in skating when they saw me watching other children skate at the VOC park skating rink. My dad immediately arranged for a coach to give specialised training in speed skating," Darshini said.

After she completed her record, Anand, the Correspondent of Yuvabharathi Public School, describing her as a little skating star, said that Darshini was good in academics too. "We are proud of her achievements and we will continue to allow her to practice at the skating rink in school," Anand said.

Darshini shared with us that she had represented Coimbatore district in the 150-metres and 500-metre Roller Skating Championship at the district- and state-level tornaments in 2014. She had won a bronze medal in 500-metres at the Tamil Nadu State Roller Skating Championship in 2015, in Chennai. She also bagged two gold medals in 150-metres and 500-metres event at Second South Zone Open State Roller Skating Championship 2015, held in Puducherry.
