Coimbatore Police Crack Down on Banned Tobacco and Illicit Liquor Trade; Eight Arrested

Eight persons were arrested in separate operations across Coimbatore for selling banned tobacco products, illegal liquor and consuming alcohol in public. Police also seized large quantities of gutka, and banned tobacco products and liquor bottles.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police intensified enforcement against the sale of banned tobacco products, illegal liquor and public drinking, arresting eight persons in separate operations conducted across the city. Large quantities of gutka, Hans, pan masala, tobacco products and liquor bottles were seized during the raids.

In Saravanampatti, police arrested Santhosh (23) of Pudukkottai district for allegedly selling banned 'Djarum Black' cigarettes near Vinayaga Bikes at Gandhimaa Nagar.

In Sundarapuram, Kumar (47) of Karur district was arrested near the TASMAC outlet at Ayyappan Nagar, Eachanari, for allegedly selling banned Hans and Cool Lip tobacco products. Police said the shop owner, Vigneshwaran, is absconding.

Karumbukadai police arrested Mohammed Imthiyas (28) of Kalavai after allegedly recovering gutka and Hans sachets from his possession during a vehicle check at Saramedu.

In another raid, Peelamedu police arrested Manikandan (48) of Sivaganga district, Arjunan (48) of Chinniyampalayam and Ravi (55) of Ondipudur following searches at a bakery on Avinashi Road and a tea stall near a private College. Police seized 300 Hans sachets, 54 Cool Lip packets, 850 Vimal pan masala packets, 800 V1 tobacco packets, 50 Swagath packets, 18 RMD pan masala packets, 18 M-Tobacco packets and a two-wheeler allegedly used for transporting the contraband.

In a separate enforcement drive against illegal liquor sales and public drinking, Rathinapuri police arrested Gopal (39) of Periyar Nagar for allegedly consuming alcohol in a public place near Sanganur Pallam.

Singanallur police arrested Saravanan (29) near Irugur Road for allegedly selling liquor illegally and seized 15 bottles of Old Cask brandy from his possession.

Peelamedu police also arrested Divakar (32) of Theni district and Dinesh Babu (24) of Thanjavur district for allegedly selling liquor illegally near the Thanneer Pandal petrol bunk. Police seized 16 bottles of Juno Pink brandy, 12 bottles of After Dark brandy and 14 bottles of Juno Orange brandy.

Police said further investigations are under way.
