The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the paramilitary Tripura State Rifles (TSR) worked to rescue flood-affected people in west Tripura and its adjoining Sepahijala district. Incessant rains owing to a depression in the Bay of Bengal have submerged at least 10 municipal wards in Agartala and some areas in the city’s outskirts. “We have rescued about 400 families and sent them to a makeshift relief centre. We are constantly monitoring the situation,” West Tripura district magistrate Dr. Milind Ramteke told newsmen on Monday.
Youth dies
350 families have been evacuated in the Bishalgarh sub-division of Sepahijala district.
A youth died after he was washed away by flood water on Sunday night. Rescuers recovered his body, the police said.
The Howrah River on edge of Agartala city, which has had insufficient water for some years now, is flowing at the danger level.
The district administration has issued warnings to people residing nearby to be cautious and to try and move to safer places at their earliest.
Different low lying localities within Agartala municipal corporation limit and outside have been submerged by flooded water.
