Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes 11 trips to poll-bound UP in 10 months, more in tow

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mahoba on October 24 - when he launches the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (irrigation scheme) in the parched Bundelkhand region - will be his eleventh to the state in 10 months, covering 13 destinations. He is also scheduled to visit his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi. The next day, he will visit Agra to distribute DUDA-built homes to the poor.

The bombardment of PM visits to the state reflects BJP target to wrest UP in the assembly elections in 2017.

According to party sources, he is likely to address about eight rallies across UP in November and December.

Some of these rallies will be the part of four Parivartan Yatra the party is launching from different corners of the state.

While some of the PM rallies would be part of these yatras, a grand finale would be held with a mega rally in Lucknow on December 24.

Besides Modi, Union home minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh has emerged so far as the only face of BJP in Uttar Pradesh. During his visits, Modi visited various cities 14 times and these tours would come to an end in October.

Even though only four visits to UP have been organised by the BJP, all his visits have been to launch some national scheme and it was viewed as BJP's bid to showcase NDA government's development work at the Centre. When Modi visited Lucknow on Dussehra, party insiders confirmed it was keeping in view the state polls in 2017. BJP national vice-president Dr Dinesh Sharma may have denied any politics behind PM's visit to Lucknow, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati accused Modi of using the occasion of Dussehra for poll gains .

Though Modi's October 24 visit is ostensibly a government programme, the launch of the national irrigation scheme, according to BJP strategists, will influence farmers who form a sizeable part of the population/voters of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. The same day, the PM will go to his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi to launch a railway project.
