When Quentin Tarantino was inspired by Kamal Haasan’s film

Director Quentin Tarantino told Anurag Kashyap that he was inspired by an 'Indian serial-killer film' for a sequence in his 2003 film Kill Bill

Director Quentin Tarantino told Anurag Kashyap that he was inspired by an 'Indian serial-killer film' for a sequence in his 2003 film Kill Bill.

Quentin Tarantino’s style of filmmaking has inspired many around the world. His unique way of shooting graphic violent scenes, non-linear storytelling, the easter eggs have all hooked Tarantino’s fans so much that they regard the universe of his film as Tarantino-verse.

But Tarantino also derives inspirations from films across all languages. In a chat with director Anurag Kashyap, Tarantino once revealed that he was inspired by Kamal Hasaan’s 2001 film Aalavandhan for the animated sequence in Kill Bill.

Kashyap earlier told Mid-day, “Sight and Sound critic Naman Ramchandran first told me this. So when I met Quentin in Venice I asked him whether the Manga sequence in Kill Bill was inspired from an Indian film and he excitedly remarked, ‘Yes, I saw this Indian serial-killer film which showed violence as animated.'”

“There is only one Indian serial-killer film which was made before Kill Bill where violence was animated, and that was Abhay (Aalavandhan).”

Kamal Haasan, who played the lead role in the film, told News18 in 2012, “When I did the animation action sequence 12 years ago, it was seen as self-indulgent and odd by a lot of people. Now that it has been endorsed by a filmmaker of such brilliance, critics will be kinder to some of the things I attempt in my films.”

Kamal Haasan celebrates his 65th birthday today.
