Ex-CJ of Madras and Kerala high courts Justice Subhashan Reddy is dead

The former chief justice of Madras and Kerala high courts and the first chairman of the Andhra Pradesh state Human Rights Commission Justice B Subhashan Reddy passed away in Hyderabad on Wednesday morning after a brief illness.

He was 76 and is survived by his wife and three sons. While his youngest son is a software engineer, the two elder sons are practising advocates in the Telangana High Court. His brother-in-law Justice B Subash Reddy is presently a Supreme Court judge.

Reddy, who recently retired as the Lokayukta of the combined Andhra Pradesh state, had been suffering from liver-related problems and was undergoing treatment at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Gachibowli. He breathed his last this morning.

Born on March 2, 1943, at Bagh Amberpet in Hyderabad, Reddy did his graduation in science, but later did his LLB and LLM from Osmania University. He enrolled himself as an advocate in 1966 and started practicing in all branches of law including Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Revenue and Taxation Laws.

He was appointed as judge of the combined Andhra High Court in 1991 and was elevated to the position of chief justice of Madras in September 2001. In November 2004, he was transferred as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

He was appointed as the first chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission after his retirement and later as the Lokayukta.

Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu, Governor ESL Narasimhan, YSR Congress party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy and other prominent people, including high court judges condoled Justice Reddy’s demise.
