India General Elections 2019: The first of the mega seven-phase Lok Sabha elections kickstarted Thursday in 91 Lok Sabha constituencies across 20 states and Union Territories. The voting time for most of the parliamentary constituencies is from 7 am to 6 pm. However, in Left-Wing extremism-affected areas and the North Eastern States, the timings vary.

1) The eight Lok Sabha constituencies of western Uttar Pradesh, where polling is being held in the first of the seven-phase general elections, registered over 24 per cent voter turnout till 11 am, an official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. Here, three Central ministers, General V K Singh, Mahesh Sharma and Satyapal Singh, and one former minister, Sanjeev Balyan, are fighting to retain their seats. Today’s poll will be the first major test of whether the Gathbandhan of Mayawati’s BSP, Akhilesh Yadav’s SP and Ajit Singh’s RLD actually work on the ground.

2) At 11 am, the voter turnout percentage in the remaining states was recorded as follows: 27% voting in Meghalaya, 22.84% voting in Telangana, 23.78% in Uttarakhand, 23.10% in Lakshadweep, 13.7% in Maharashtra, 24.66% in Jammu and Baramulla parliamentary constituencies, 38.08% in West Bengal and 26.5% in Tripura.

3) Life in Kashmir was disrupted due to a strike called by separatists to protest against polling in the Valley and NIA action against Hurriyat Conference leaders and their kin.

4) In Andhra Pradesh, according to local media reports, Janasena MLA candidate Madhusudhan Gupta was detained for allegedly damaging electronic voting machines (EVMs). Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, on the other hand, wrote to the Election Commission and sought repolling in a few booths.

5) In West Bengal, a Trinamool Congress panchayat head and two others were allegedly attacked by BJP workers at Mathabhanga. The Election Commission has sought a report in this regard.

6) Fifteen per cent polling was registered in Odisha till 10 am. Chief Minister Patnaik is seeking a fifth term and his party appears to be confident in rural areas, where the BJD’s welfare schemes over the last 19 years continue to have a resonance.

7) An estimated 10.2 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the first two hours of polling today in Assam amid reports of EVM glitches in a few booths and an IED being detected at an oil pipeline.

8) Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers. He called upon all those whose constituencies are voting in the first phase to turn out in record numbers and exercise their franchise. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi too took to the micro-blogging site to remind voters of “No ACCHE DIN” and appealed to them to cast their ballot “wisely” for the “soul of India”.

9) All parliamentary constituencies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep, Telangana and Uttarakhand will go to polls in this phase. And few seats in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal will also vote in the first phase. Simultaneous voting is also taking place for single phase Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and for 28 of 147 seats in Odisha.

10) A total of 14 parliamentary constituencies out of 25 in the eight northeastern states will vote in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls today. Of the two seats in Arunachal Pradesh, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is seeking re-election from Arunachal West. Four seats in Assam will go to polls, with former CM Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi testing poll waters from Kaliabor.
