Senior advocate HS Phoolka Thursday resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party. Phoolka said he has submitted his resignation to party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

“I have resigned from AAP & handed over resignation to Kejriwal ji today. Though he asked me not to resign but I insisted,” Phoolka tweeted. He added that he will hold a press briefing in this regard on Friday to explain the reasons behind leaving the party.

While Phoolka was not available for comment, it is believed that the decision could have been triggered over alleged “changes in recent resolution” moved by an AAP MLA to strip former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi of Bharat Ratna. The BJP has alleged that “content of resolution was changed” as the Aam Aadmi Party wants to forge an alliance with the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The senior advocate, who is representing the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, had earlier said he would resign from the party if it chooses to ally with the Congress. Calling the Congress “perpetrators” of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Phoolka had said that any alliance with the former would amount to giving them a clean chit in the case.

“I shall be the first person to quit the Aam Aadmi Party if and when it joins hands with the Congress (either) in a direct or indirect manner,” he had said.

Phoolka had also resigned as a legislator from the Punjab Assembly last year, expressing unhappiness over the state government’s alleged “failure” to initiate action against former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and retired DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in sacrilege incidents.
