Tamil Nadu government has planned to rename around 3,000 places in the state, soon.
A recent release from the state government states that more than 3,000 locations in the state has been ear-marked to be renamed shortly. Among them are Triplicane to be changed as Thiruvallikeni, Trichy to Tiruchirappalli, Tuticorin to Thoothukudi and Poonamalle to Poovirundhavalli.
Speaking on this Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture Ma Foi K Pandiarajan said that a government order renaming around 3,000 locations will be issued in two weeks.
The renaming decision was taken after 32 districts set up a joint high level committee to finalise the new names. The committee have reconfirmed the suggestions from historians and Tamil scholars.
However, this announcement of TN government to rename 3000 places has garnered mixed response from political parties. BJP, the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh has appreciated this move by Tamil Nadu government but called it a late move.
K Ramakrishnan, General Secretary of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, said, "There are many places in the state named after the Britishers, as a mark of tribute. We urge that such historic names shall be retained".
He also added "There are many places bearing names with caste associations like Gounderpallayam, Nayakarpalayam and Palapalayam, these names should be taken note by the government for change".
