Former Union minister and noted Kannada actor MH Ambareesh died after suffering a cardiac arrest. The 66-year-old was admitted to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru on Saturday evening after he complained of breathlessness. He was reportedly suffering from a kidney ailment.

A three-time Lok Sabha member and also a former state minister, he had not been keeping well in recent years. Ambareesh is survived by his wife, actress Sumalatha and son Abhishek.

Popularly known as the 'rebel star', Ambareesh was a Vokkaliga leader who wielded considerable clout in the Mandya region of Karnataka, where the community has a large presence.

He was born on May 29, 1952, in the Doddarasinakere village of Mandya district in the erstwhile Mysore State (now Karnataka). He was named as Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath.

Entering the tinsel world through the movie, 'Nagarahavu', directed by veteran late Puttanna Kannagal in 1972, Ambareesh carved a niche for himself in the Kannada film industry, particularly as an 'angry man', earning the title 'rebel star'.

After a successful acting career, spanning over 200 films and state honours and other awards, he joined the Congress in 1994. He was a minister of state for Information and Broadcasting in the 14th Lok Sabha but resigned over his dissatisfaction with the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal.

Tributes and condolences have started pouring in for the former Congress leader and veteran actor. The party said, "We are shocked and saddened to hear about the untimely passing of former Union minister, veteran actor and Congress leader Ambareesh. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy remembered his association with Ambareesh which he said extended beyond politics. "Deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the untimely death of my beloved friend Ambareesh. In his death, an era of love and affection in Kannada film industry has ended. With Ambareesh I enjoyed a friendship that went beyond political affiliations and films. He was a rebel who was loved by all. He has carved a unique place in both politics and films. Ambareesh leaves back a legacy that will be cherished by his family, friends, fans and followers. May his soul rest in peace and his family and friends get the strength to bear this loss," he said.

Former chief minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah, in whose government Ambareesh was the housing minister, also expressed his condolences.
