Confirming the incident, both the police and Army spokespersons said six militants were killed in the gunbattle which broke out in Sekipora area of Bijbehara in Anantnag district. The identity of the slain militants are yet to be ascertained, police said.

According to the police, the encounter broke out when officials launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

“In one of the most successful operations of this year so far aàsix Lashkar militants killed. The operation was launched last night on a hideout in foothills of Waghama Sutkipora of Bijbeihara Anantnag. Six dead bodies of militants and six rifles recovered,” J&K Police said in a statement.

“Incriminating materials including huge quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” the police said in another statement.

“Pertinently no collateral damage took place in this incident,” police added.

Urging locals to not visit areas close to the encounter zone, police said, “Citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any.”

Earlier this week, four Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in Shopian district during a pre-dawn search operation. An Army paratrooper was also killed in the encounter.
