BJP slams Congress march to Parrikar house

The BJP in Goa on Wednesday criticised the Congress’s decision to march to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s private residence and pointed out that the Jan Sangh did not react this way when Jawaharlal Nehru was ailing in his last year in office.

The BJP in Goa on Wednesday criticised the Congress’s decision to march to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s private residence and pointed out that the Jan Sangh did not react this way when Jawaharlal Nehru was ailing in his last year in office.

Addressing the media, state BJP president Vinay Tendulkar said, “Nehru was suffering from paralysis and could not function as a Prime Minister should. At that time, our leaders – whether it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee or (others in) Jan Sangh — did not take a morcha to his house and demand his resignation.”

On Tuesday, the Opposition supported a march to Parrikar’s private residence, seeking his resignation. The CM has been functioning from his home since returning from Mumbai after treatment.

Addressing the media, Tendulkar said that no opposition party has gone to political leaders when they are being treated, or are unwell. “When Sharad Pawar was a part of the Congress (UPA) government at the Centre as Agriculture Minister, during a time when there were key issues related to farmers and public distribution…Sharad Pawar too was suffering from cancer and was being treated abroad. The BJP did not make it an issue and the Congress did not drop him from the Central cabinet,” the BJP leader said.

State Congress president Girish Chodankar said, “(It is) all a bluff. All these ideas…(what) they say about Nehru’s health is all a bluff. They should just answer the main question: does Goa have a functioning government?”
