Justice Kurian Joseph, a senior member of Supreme Court Collegium, is set to retire at the end of this month. He was last in the news for an encounter with Malayalam actor Sarada, when she remarked that he was sure to have made it to her film had she “met him earlier.” He was quick to quip that he hoped he would make it to her “next” film.

But Justice Joseph has made it to another list: the list of the top 10 Judges ever at Supreme Court with the maximum number of judgments authored. He stands at number 10, having written 1034 judgments so far. He is the only sitting Supreme Court judge on the list.
The ‘top-ten’ list has been put out by LawConsult, a group putting out information and data on the Judiciary “since 1980” said Devyanshu Shekhar an Associate with Law Consult.
His more memorable judgments include those on Triple Talaq, National Judicial Accountability Commission, and the Nagaraj review (the SC/ST Judgement).
Justice Joseph was among four seniormost Judges at the time of the former CJI Dipak Misra who on January 12 made public the letter they wrote on what they thought was inappropriate allocation of cases.
In April, at an interaction with students, Justice Joseph spoke on the two “watchdogs” of democracy, judiciary and the media. He said “both the watchdogs have to be vigilant, barking for saving democracy, barking for when the owner’s property is in danger.” In remarks which assume significance given the ongoing tussle in the topmost court as also the relationship between Executive and Judiciary, he added: “The barking is to alert the owner and if even the barking is not yielding the fruit of catching the attention of the owner and the threat continues, barking dogs will be left with no option but to bite.”
Joseph has said he will not accept a government job after his retirement on November 29.
