“If at all Brexit impacts India, it does so positively.”
It is this perspective that visiting British MP and secretary of state for international development Priti Patel will promote during her meetings over the next few days with Indian political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, finance minister Arun Jaitley and skill development minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
“This is an incredible time to be here, as fresh opportunities to crystallize trade and commerce deals have arisen after Britain’s decision to exit from the European Union”, said Patel - the first secretary of state of the Theresa May government to arrive on an official visit.
The UK has been partnering India in furthering the NDA government’s projects for building smart cities, skill development and the “make in India” programme. “The two countries are on a new threshold to push forward the economic and trade agenda and enhance the economic partnership”, said Patel, a second generation Gujarati origin migrant who was first elected to the House of Commons in 2010.
“UK has the expertise to provide technical support towards fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic agenda. It will be a privilege to meet the Indian Prime Minister once again on Saturday”, Patel said in an interview to HT.
Patel is scheduled to fly down to Bhopal on Saturday evening for discussions with Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on infrastructure development in the state. “Big opportunities for global investors have opened up in India”, Patel said.
