Tamil Nadu govt fixes two time slots for bursting crackers on Diwali

"Based on the Supreme Court verdict, the Tamil Nadu government permits bursting of crackers between 6 am and 7 am and 7 pm and 8 pm," the release said.

The Tamil Nadu government Friday fixed the time slot for bursting firecrackers in the state after Supreme Court modified its order. Under the new announcement, people will be allowed to burst firecrackers twice on the day, first between 6 am to 7 am and then in the evening from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The state government in a release said, “Based on the Supreme Court verdict, the Tamil Nadu government permits bursting of crackers between 6 am and 7 am and 7 pm and 8 pm.” They also urged people to avoid bursting firecrackers around hospitals and places of worships.

Partly modifying its earlier order, which fixed the time slot for bursting crackers on Diwali at 8 pm-10 pm, the Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed southern states like Tamil Nadu to decide their own schedule. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan, however, said the time slot should not exceed the two-hour limit set by the court. The court allowed the relief after Tamil Nadu filed a plea seeking permission to burst crackers in the morning, from 4.30 am to 6.30 am, on Diwali. A similar plea was made by Puducherry also.

The state government had contended that each state or sect has a separate set of beliefs and traditions as far as Diwali celebrations are concerned and the restriction would amount to “rejecting the people with their due religious rights and would subject the people of the state into much hardship”.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board would study the air quality seven days before and after the festival in all the corporation limits. On October 30, the state government had said it would consult stakeholders regarding the Supreme Court’s decision of allowing the state to pick a two-hour slot for bursting firecrackers on Diwali.

Diwali falls on November 6 in the state.
