High-pitched campaigning is underway for the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections scheduled next month — first among a couple of states that will go to polls this year. Beginning Monday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is on a two-day tour in Madhya Pradesh that has been under BJP rule for 15 years now. He is visiting the politically crucial Malwa-Nimar region that accounts for 66 of the 230 Assembly seats in the state. While addressing a rally in Jhabua on Monday, Gandhi took a jibe at Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and said: “Name of the son of CM’s son surfaced in the Panama papers, but no action was taken. Even a country like Pakistan punished its former PM when he was named in the Panama papers.”
Responding to this, Chouhan said he will file a criminal defamation suit against Gandhi for dragging his name and that of his family members in several scams, including in Vyapam and Panama papers.
Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress is in opposition since 2003, will go to polls on November 28. On day two, Gandhi is set to tour crucial Malwa-Nimar region and will also address rallies in Indore, Dhar, Khargone and Mhow.
