Seventeen people died, while several others were battling for their life in Aliganj town of Etah on Saturday after consuming spurious liquor on Friday.
The critical were shifted to the government hospital in Saifai. Four of them are reported to have lost their vision.
Ten officials, including eight police personnel, were suspended after the incident came to light.
“The liquor was purchased from an outlet owned by Sri Pal, who has been arrested. An FIR has been lodged against him at Aliganj police station and action will be taken against others found involved,” said Etah senior superintendent of police, Ajay Shankar Rai.
Taking note of the incident, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav suspended district excise officer VK Sharma, sub-divisional magistrate (Aliganj) Sanjeev Kumar, circle officer Asha Ram Ahirwar and station officer Mukesh Kumar deputed at Aliganj. The police outpost in charge and five constables were also suspended.
The state government said the treatment of those who lost their vision will be done free of cost. They will also be given Rs 50,000.
