64 die as thunderstorms wreak havoc in 4 states, bad weather likely to continue

Thunderstorms and dust storms wreaked havoc on Sunday evening in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi NCR and West Bengal killing at least 64 people and leaving behind a trail of destruction.

At several places in north India including Delhi, high-velocity winds uprooted trees and affected road, rail and air services.

38 killed in Uttar Pradesh:

Thunderstorm and dust storms that hit Uttar Pradesh on Sunday claimed at least 38 lives. At least 50 people were injured and around 117 houses were damaged in the hail and thunderstorm.

12 killed in West Bengal:

Around 12 people including four children were killed in West Bengal

The hail and thunderstorm claimed at least nine lives in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

2 killed in Delhi:

At least two were killed in the thunderstorm in Delhi on Sunday.

The sudden change of weather in Delhi forced airport authorities to divert at least 41 flights and delay another 24, an official said. Vistara's Srinagar-Delhi flight was diverted to Amritsar and its Lucknow-Delhi flight was sent to Lucknow due to the inclement weather.

According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorms also occurred at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

Subsequently, on May 9, several parts of Uttar Pradesh were struck by a severe storm that left 18 dead and 27 others injured.

Met department (India Meteorological Department) has issued a warning for Monday saying that thunderstorm accompanied with squall (wind speed reaching 50­70 kmph) very likely in isolated places such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, East Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim and Odisha.
