Unclaimed gold worth Rs 2.60 cr recovered from Dubai-Mumbai Jet Airways flight

The total gold weighing 8990 grams has been valued at Rs 2,59,04,146. Officials said the gold bars and cut pieces were hidden below the cushion of two seats used by passengers inside the Jet Airways flight.

Mumbai: Unclaimed gold worth Rs 2.60 crore was recovered from a Jet Airways flight at the CSI Airport at Sahar here on Tuesday. The gold was recovered by the officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs when they checked the Jet Airways Flight No 9W 579 after the plane landed here from Dubai. A press release issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs, CSI Airport, Sahar, Andheri East, Mumbai, said the officers recovered six gold bars of foreign marking weighing 1000 grams each and six cut gold pieces, the entire gold weighing 2990 grams in total.

The total gold weighing 8990 grams has been valued at Rs 2,59,04,146. The release said the gold bars and cut pieces were hidden below the cushion of two seats used by passengers inside the Jet Airways flight. The gold bars and cut pieces were wrapped with black colour adhesive tape, it added. It is suspected that the unclaimed gold bars and cut pieces were was being smuggled into India, V Rama Mathews, Commissioner of Customs, said in the press release.

“Based on specific information, the officers of the AIU rummaged the Jet Airways flight no 9W 579 which had arrived from Dubai. In the course of rummaging, the officers recovered 6 gold bars of foreign marking weighing 1000 grams each and 6 cut gold bars weighing 2990 grams. The said unclaimed gold bars and cut pieces were seized under the reasonable belief that the same were being smuggled into India. Further investigation in the matter is under progress,” the release said.
