Tamil Nadu Farmers get Rs 7, 10 as compensation for crop loss

Tamil Nadu Farmers get Rs 7, 10 as compensation for crop loss

The farmers in Tamil Nadh received Rs 7 and Rs 10 as a compensation for crop loss. The compensation cheques were issued to them by the Dindigul Central Cooperative Bank Ltd to help them for the crop they had lost. The farmers were shocked to see the amount on the cheques as they were as low as Rs 5.

The Tamil Nadu government admitted that such a mistake did happen at the villages in Dindigul district of the state. They have also directed the insurance companies to rectify the “clerical errors”.

Raising the matter in the Assembly, DMK MLA K Pitchandi from Kilpennathur pointed out that the farmers were given crop loss amount as low as Rs 5.

“Karupasamy gets Rs 10 compensation after paying a premium of Rs 102 for insuring his one acre. So does Thirumalaisamy, who got Rs 5 for his premium of Rs 50 for an acre. Looks like this is the state which got highest compensation and lowest disbursement,” he said.

DMK leader MK Stalin slammed the Tamil Nadu government when Agriculture Minister R Doraikannu tried to explain the compensation under the crop insurance scheme.

On the charges, Minister for Co-operation Sellur K Raju said that under the crop insurance scheme in the State, 3,172 farmers in Dindigul were given Rs 8.82 crore. “Just Rs 5 and Rs 10 relief for an acre of distress?” asked MK Stalin.

He added that he has received complaints from five farmers and “we have taken up the matter with the Department of Agriculture. The district Collectors concerned have been asked to look into the issue and take necessary action to provide the farmers insurance amount due to them,” he added.
