MPs meet leaders of various parties for help in the move against government

The YSR Congress Party on Thursday reached out to the Opposition, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, the Left parties, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Biju Janata Dal, to gather support for a no-confidence motion it will move in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Party MPs met Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Biju Janata Dal leader Bhartruhari Mahtab, Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy and Aam Aadmi Party MP Bhagwant Mann.

The party also reached out to the Shiv Sena, an ally of the ruling NDA.

“We will move the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha tomorrow [on Friday]. The Congress, the Shiv Sena, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the Trinamool Congress, the Biju Janata Dal and the Left parties have assured us of support...,” V.P. Velagappalli, MP, told The Hindu.

Simple demand

If the motion is admitted by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, it will be the first-ever no-confidence motion against the Modi government.

“Our demand is simple: The Union government keep its promises made during the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and confer the Special Category Status on the State promised in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The YSR Congress has nine members in the Lok Sabha, and one of them, Butta Renuka, has joined the Telugu Desam Party.

YSR (Congress) president Jaganmohan Reddy had announced that his party MPs would resign by April 6, when the Budget Session of Parliament, will conclude, if the demand for a special package is not met.

Party sources said the decision was taken as there was speculation that the session of Parliament, which washed out because of protests, would end by next week.
