Krishnagiri: Farmers from Krishnagiri are dumping several tractor loads of tomatoes in lake s since the prices of tomatoes have fallen as low as Rs.2 per kilo.
Tomato production has increased several folds in the State recently and this has resulted in a steep fall in tomato prices. Several farmers haven’t yet plucked their produce since they would need to pay higher wages for farm workers.
Tomato farmers in Mottur, Puliyampatti, Singalam, and Kathirampatti are dumping their produce in lakes due to low prices. However, several farmers requested that both State and Central governments should come forward to provide cold storage facilities for farmers and also to provide adequate training to use them. Farmers said that if there are cold storage facilities, then they could sell the produce when prices go up in the market.
