A fire has been reported onboard Sagar Bhushan, a drill vessel at Cochin Shipyard leaving at least five dead and several injured. The ship is owned by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and had been docked at the yard for maintenance work. The blast reportedly took place inside the water tank of the ship. At least two people are still stuck inside the vessel and efforts are on to rescue them.
Two of the dead have been identified as Gavin and Ramshad.
Fire and rescue teams are at the site. More details are awaited. The Cochin Shipyard is shut today on Mahashivratri and only some sections were open to conduct maintenance work. What caused the fire is yet to be ascertaiend.
