The CBI on Wednesday said a senior student is believed to have murdered a seven-year-old student of Ryan International School in Gurugram on September 8 in a bid to postpone exams and a parent-teachers meeting scheduled for that day.

Over a month after the CBI took over the probe into the murder, it called for a press conference on November 8.

The victim, a Class II student, was found murdered in the school’s washroom. The police arrested school bus conductor Ashok Kumar and two senior officials of the school management.

The murder triggered protests from parents and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar requested the Union government to order a CBI probe into the killing.

A CBI official told reporters on Wednesday that a Class XI student of the school was apprehended on Tuesday night in connection with the case. He had carried a knife to the school on the fateful day.

Not pre-planned: CBI

The CBI said the murder did not appear to be pre-planned. "It looks like the deceased child just was at the wrong place at the wrong time."

The CBI ruled out the possibility of a sexual assault on the victim. "No sexual assault theory came out during our investigation," it said.

The suspect is lodged in Kingsway Camp in New Delhi. The CBI is expected to seek his custody when the Juvenile Justice Board takes up the case.

The CBI said Kumar was still in judicial custody and he had not been given a clean chit yet.

The father of the suspect has claimed that his son was innocent and he was wrongly framed in the case.
