The stretch between Coimbatore Railway Station on State Bank Road and the Ramanathapuram junction on Tiruchi Road is having the highest number of six accident black spots in Coimbatore district. Of these, a grid of 2 sq.km. at the Ramanathapuram junction has turned out to be the top accident black spot in the city.
The accident black spots were identified by emergency response services provider GVK EMRI, operator of 108 ambulances, based on the emergencies it handled apart from analysing statistics from the police through National Informatics Centre.
“The top black spots were identified after analysing the number of fatal and grievous accidents reported in a grid of 2 sq.km. The data used are from GVK EMRI and the police in the current year till July end,” said V. Muthukrishnan, GVK EMRI’s programme manager for Coimbatore.
Ramanathapuram junction, Neelambur bypass junction, Annur-Mettupalayam Road near Mettupalayam town, Tiruchi Road near Sungam, State Bank Road near Coimbatore railway station, Pappanaickenpalayam near Ramakrishna Hospital junction are among the top accident black spots in Coimbatore based on the data analysis.
“It was noted that majority of the fatal and grievous accidents analysed for the mapping were reported between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Of the 142 fatal and grievous accidents reported between Coimbatore railway station and Ramanathapuram, 113 took place between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
At Ramanathapuram grid, 60 out of 73 fell in the same time period,” said Mr. Muthukrishnan.
Pollachi Town is another place which is witnessing high number accidents where GVK EMRI has stationed an ambulance which will attend only cases reported in the area.
Similarly, GVK EMRI has plans to station an ambulance near Ramanathapuram to reduce the response time and attend emergencies immediately.
“As of now, two ambulances are stationed at Singanallur. Based on the recent mapping, realignments will be made to the standby position of the ambulances to reduce the response time and attend to emergencies immediately,” said Mr. Muthukrishnan.
Grids near the airport junction and PSG College of Technology are also accident hotspots identified on Avinashi Road for which a first responder (two-wheeler ambulance) has been stationed at Peelamedu police station.
The two-wheeler ambulance will be able to reach the accident spot even amidst heavy traffic and give first aid before the ambulance reaches the spot.
GVK EMRI is currently having a fleet of 37 ambulances of which three are first responders.
The new mapping will be shared with the city police and the rural police for making necessary traffic arrangements and take control measures.
