Auto driver sentenced to 10 year RI for abetting his wife to commit suicide

The Mahila Fast Track Court here convicted and sentenced an auto driver to 10 year rigorous imprisonment (RI) for abetting his wife to commit suicide in 2010 by harassing her demanding dowry.

The 26-year-old Kavirajan, auto driver and resident of Keelathoondi Vinayagampettai in Thiruvidaimarudur taluk married Kalaivani (23), resident of Thygarajapuram near Aduthurai, after falling in love with her.

Kalaivani who was working as teacher in a private school used to travel in his auto when they became friends and then their friendship developed into love.

They were residing at Keelathoondi Vinayagampettai village. A few after marriage, Kavirajan reportedly harassed his wife demanding dowry. This led to a frequent quarrel between the couple.

A similar quarrel broke out on March 30, 2012 when Kalaivani consumed poison in dejection. She was admitted to a private hospital in Kumbakonam where she died without responding to treatment.

Based on a complaint, Thiruvidaimarudur police registered a case under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC and arrested Kavirajan then.

Trial of the case was conducted before the Mahila Fast Track Court in Thanjavur. The Mahila FTC judge who pronounced his verdict in the case on Tuesday convicted Kavirajan and ordered him to undergo 10 year rigorous imprisonment besides slapping him with a fine of Rs 1,000.
