TIRUVARUR: Several thousands of devotees thronged and witnessed the car festival of the famous Thyagaraja Swami temple in Tiruvarur today.
The bedecked Aazhi Ther-the biggest temple chariot in Tamil Nadu - went down the four main mutt streets starting at 7.20 am.
Food Minister R Kamaraj, Collector L Nirmal Raj, Superintendent of Police Mayilvahanan, Justice Mahadevan, Madras High Court, Joint Commissioners Thennarasu and Gajendran of HR and CE Department, among others, participated and pulled the car.
The tastefully decorated giant size car weighing 350 tonnes in total decoration with a height of 96 feet moved majestically on the four main streets. The devotees shouted, ‘Thyagesa’, ‘Aroora’ as they pulled the car.
The 30-foot-tall temple chariot, which originally weighed 220 ton, was raised to 96 feet with bamboo sticks and decorative clothes, taking its total weight to 350 ton.
Mounted on the fully decorated temple car, the presiding deity – Lord Shiva – went around the four streets with the devotees pulling it using huge ropes. Two bulldozers were engaged to provide the required thrust so that devotees could move the chariot with ease.
A total of 1,500 police personnel led by Superintendent of Police Mayilvaganan were deployed to take care of the security arrangements. The district administration had declared a local holiday in the district today.
