The 1,342nd birth anniversary of King Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar , who had ruled his kingdom with Thanjavur as the capital, was celebrated with usual gaiety in various parts of the district today.

State ministers, government officials, leaders and cadre of various political parties and people from different walks of life paid tributes to Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar by garlanding his statue at Cantonment in the city.
An official function was organized by State Information and Public Relations Department in the morning when, on behalf of the State government, Minister for Tourism Vellamandi N Natarajan, Minister for Backward Class and Minorities Welfare S Valarmathi garlanded the statue of the late king.
Among others, Collector K S Palanisamy, Rajya Sabha member T Rathinavel, former ministers K P Krishnan, M Paranjothi, K K Balasubramanian and former Deputy Mayor J Srinivasan garlanded the king’s statue. A large number of AIADMK cadres belonging to its various wings were present on the occasion.
DMK cadres led by former minister K N Nehru garlanded the statue and Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) cadres led by its chief coordinator Seeman garlanded the statue while BJP cadres led by union minister Pon Radhakrishnan garlanded the statue.
Besides, Tamil Nadu Muthuaraiyar Munnetra Sangam founder president R Viswanathan, Veera Mutharaiyar Munnetra Sangam founder president K Selvakumar, Tamil Nadu Mutharaiyar Sangam general secretary M Baskaran and representatives and members of various organizations too garlanded the statue.
