MADURAI: Thousands of devotees from various parts of the State participated in the ‘Chithirai Therottam’ (Car festival) of the world renowned Sri Meenashi Sundareswarar temple which held here today as part of the ongoing 12-day annual Chithirai Brahmotsavam festival.

Amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns, the processional deities Lord Sundareswarar and his consorts Priyavidai and Meenakshi were mounted on three exquisitely decorated wooden cars. After Deeparadhana, the cars waded through the sea of people along the East, South, West and North Maasi streets around the temple with devotees chanting, ‘Hara Hara Sankara, Meenakshi Sundaraa’.
The devotees also pulled small temple cars including those of Lord Vinayaka, Lord Murugan and the Nayanmars.
Voluntary service organizations and philanthropists offered free butter milk, juice and drinking water for the devotees.
A large number of police personnel were deployed around the procession route to ensure that the temple cars reached their destination without any hindrances. Medical teams and personnel of Fire and Rescue Services department formed part of the entourage.
