TIRUCHY: In a tragic incident, a debt-ridden man committed suicide by hanging after poisoning to death his beloved wife and two children at Sankar Thoppu at Thiruvanaikkaval area here today. Police arrested his woman business partner in this connection.
The 35-year-old Viswanathan, running a footwear shop, resorted to this extreme step after he was cheated to the tune of Rs 25 lakh by his woman business partner, leaving him debt-ridden.
Viswanathan, an AIADMK worker, was found hanging from the ceiling of the bed room while his wife Deivanai (34), son Gunasekaran (14) and one and a half-year-old daughter Nishanthini were found lying dead on the floor beside the bed.
On being alerted by the neighbours, police rushed to the spot, broke open the door and removed the bodies to Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Preliminary investigations by police revealed that Sangeetha (35), dance teacher by profession and resident of Thiruverumbur area, had taken from him Rs 25 lakh for starting a dance school and promising to include him as a partner in the venture. She however neither started the dance school nor returned the money despite repeated plea, leaving him debt-ridden.
Unable to recover from the debt, Viswanathan administered pesticide to his to his wife and two children before hanging himself.
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of Viswanathan besieged the All Women Police Station, Srirangam, demanding the arrest of Sangeetha, triggering tension in the area. Senior police officials held talks with the agitators and persuaded them to call off their stir promising to take suitable action.
Following which, police registered a case and arrested Sangeetha in this connection.
