RAMESWARAM: Five Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested and their country boat was impounded by SriLankan navy in the mid-sea off Katchatheevu today for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s territorial waters.
The five fishermen namely Abishek , Arogyam, Sandya Nelson, Raja Gunasekaran and Anthony , all hailing from Thangachimadam near here, had anchored their boat and cast their nets in the mid-sea off Katchatheevu when they were rounded up by SriLankan navy and taken to Thalaimannar in the island nation, police said.
Local fishermen, however, claimed that the five fishermen were fishing in the water well within the international maritime boundary line (IMBL) when they were arrested by the SriLankan navy.
On March 26, 12 fishermen from Pudukottai district were arrested by SriLankan navy for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s territorial waters.
