Thanjavur: A gang of four masked robbers who struck at the house of the correspondent of an aided primary school near Thiruchitrambalam , robbed 12 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, allegedly at gun point, in the wee hours today and escaped.
Kavimani (32), resident of South Ottankadu near Thiruchitrambalam village in Peravurani taluk is running a government aided primary school in the same village.
On Sunday night, he along with his mother Kannagi (55) and sister Kasthuri (24) was sleeping at home when the four masked robbers gained entry into the house after breaking open the lock. When they attempted to raise alarm, the masked robbers threatened them at gun-point and snatched the jewels worn by Kannagi. When she resisted with all her might, the robbers attacked her with an iron-rod. Then, the gangsters robbed 12 sovereigns of jewels from Kannagi and Kasthuri, took away Rs 1.50 lakh kept in the bureau and then fled from there.
Kannagi who sustained injury on her leg was admitted to a hospital in Thiruchitrambalam.
On being informed, a police team from Thiruchitrambalam police station rushed there, inspected the scene of crime and conducted enquiry. Based on a complaint by Kavimani, Thiruchitrambalam police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
