Thanjavur: A police special team arrested an idol thief here today and recovered from him a stolen panachaloka idol of Goddess Mariamman. Police are also on the lookout for two more accused in this connection.
The value of the idol is estimated to be over Rs 50 lakh.
The 1.6 foot tall panchaloka idol of Goddess Amman was stolen by an unidentified gang from the famous Muthumariamman temple at Thuraiyur village in Sethubavachatram police limit on January 21, 2017. Based on a complaint, Sethubavachatram police registered a case and were conducting investigation.
Led by sub inspector Kannan, a special team was formed to nab the idol thieves. The special team conducted investigation. Investigation by police revealed the involvement of three member gang in the idol theft.
On a tip off, the special team arrested G Ramesh (26), resident of Fathima Nagar, Nanjikottai road, Thanjavur, and recovered the stolen idol from his house. Police are also on the lookout for two more accused who are absconding.
