THANJAVUR: The 19-day-old sit-in protest embarked on by Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee in front of the collectorate here was called off abruptly today as the agitating students and youngsters strongly opposed and raised slogans against the participation of DMK leaders in the agitation.
With the farmers’ sit-in agitation continuing here for the successive 19th day, people from various walks of life have been had been pouring into the protest venue to express their solidarity with the protesters and their cause.
Politicians and cine-artistes including G K Vasan, cine directors Kalanjiam and Gauthaman visited the protest venue last week as a show of their solidarity with the farmers demanding , among others things, the immediate constitution of Cauvery Management Board.
A couple of days ago, Tamil Nadu agriculture minister R Duraikkannu and Rajya Sabha member R Vaithilingam held talks with the agitators in the presence of Collector A Annadurai and SP J Mahesh in a bid to persuade the farmers to call off their stir but to no avail.
Trouble began when a group of DMK leaders including former ministers T R Baalu, S S Palanimanickam , MLAs Durai Chandrasekaran (Thiruvaiyaru) and Sakkottai Anbalagan (Kumbakonam) took part in it in a show of solidarity with the farmers.
However, a group of students and youngsters who have been taking part in the sit-in stir from the day one, took strong objection to the participation of DMK leaders in the stir and raised slogans against the leaders alleging that DMK was responsible for all the crisis that Tamil Nadu is facing now.
“We have been agitating from the day one. Where were all these leaders gone till yesterday?”, asked Brahadeeswaran, a youth hailing from Thanjavur.
Brahadeeswaran also recalled how DMK leader Karunanidhi betrayed Tamil Nadu in Cauvery issue. Katchatheevu island and SriLankan Tamils issue.
We (the youngsters and students) took part in the agitation as the organizers announced it as the agitation would be apolitical. Now they are allowing the politicians in ignoring our strong objections. Hereafter, no students and youngsters will participate in the agitation” the youngsters said.
As the students and youngsters squatted on the national highway and raised slogans against participation of DMK leaders in the stir, some unruly DMK workers roughed them up.
With students and youngsters announcing that they would no longer participate in the stir, the organizers were left with no option but to call off the stir this evening.
