Thanjavur: Unidentified burglars who struck at the locked house of Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Vasan’s close relative in Thanjavur decamped with gold, diamond jewels worth several lakh rupees.
Dr Pratiba, resident of Arulananda Nagar in Thanjavur is a close relative of TMC president G K Vasan. She is the sister of G R Moopanar’s son-in-law Suresh Moopanar.
Prathiba who is serving as gynaecologist at Rajah Mirasdar government hospital in Thanjavur left for Vellore, along with her husband Nagaraj, at 5.15 pm on Monday after properly locking the house.
A few hours later, Akbar Basha, security and resident of Maharnonbu Chavadi area in Thanjavur, who came for night duty as usual at 8 pm was shocked to find the door broken open. He went in and found the things kept in bureau lying strewn on the floor. He immediately informed the police at Thanjavur south police station.
Following which, police personnel led by DSP Tamilselvan rushed there, inspected the scene of crime and conducted enquiry.
On being informed, Dr Prathiba also rushed back and found 48 sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 3.75 lakh cash kept in the bureau stolen. Besides, 4 diamond rings, 15 pairs of diamond ear-studs, one-pair of diamond bangles, 3 diamond bracelets and one pair of diamond pendant attached to ear-ring were also found stolen. The value of the looted gold and diamond jewels is estimated to several lakh rupees.
Based on a complaint by Dr Prathiba, Thanjavur south police have registered a case and further investigation is on. Police have formed special teams to nab the unidentified culprits.
