TIRUCHY: Summoned by Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Department, Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar’s father Chinnathambi and brother Udhayakumar appeared for enquiry at the Tiruchy office of income tax department today in connection the seizure of unaccounted money and incriminating documents from the house of health minister during the income tax raid on Friday.
They were accompanied by their auditor Jayaram. Assistant Commissioners Senthil Kumar and Yasar Arafat of Income Tex Department conducted enquiry, sources said.
Emerging out of the income tax office, minister Vijayabaskar’s father Chinnathambi termed the income tax raids conducted at the minister’s residence and office as political vendetta. “We are not scared following the income tax raid. We did not indulge in any irregularities. We in fact extended full cooperation to the officials to the raid” Chinnathambi said.
Just days before the crucial assembly by-poll in Chennai’s R K Nagar constituency on April 12, sleuths of Income Tax Department on Friday raided the houses and offices of Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, Samathuva Makkal Katchi president and cine-actor Sarathkumar, former MP G Rajendran and Dr MGR Medical University vice-chancellor Dr Geethalakshmi.
Raids were also conducted at the minister’s residence in Sourashtra street in Iluppur, a lodge namely Rasi located on Viralimalai road, Mother Theresa educational institutions at Mettusalai, Redimix and Rasi Blue Metals (stone quarry) at Thiruvengaivasal and a relative’s house at Thirumayam.
At the end of the raid, unaccounted money to the tune of Rs 4.50 crore and some incriminating documents related to transaction of Rs 80 crore were seized by the sleuths of Income Tax Department.
In this connection, the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Department, Coimbatore sent a summon to the minister’s father and brother asking them to appear for enquiry at the Tiruchy office of Income Tax Department.
The raids were conducted in the wake of the complaints that he was involved in money distribution to voters in RK Nagar in favour of AIADMK Amma (Sasikala faction) candidate TTV Dinakaran.
