Ten injured in suicide blast during Eid prayers in Pakistan

At least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured Tuesday when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Shia mosque during Eid-ul Azha prayers in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province.

The suicide blast took place in Shikarpur district’s Khanpur tehsil, around 470 kilometres north of Karachi, police said, adding another attacker fled from the spot.

Police also foiled a separate suicide blast at another Shia mosque in the Shikarpur district where last year at least 61 people were killed in a suicide attack on a mosque.

Police said four suicide attackers had infiltrated Khanpur during Eid prayers, the Dawn reported.

Two attackers had targeted a Shia mosque but were stopped by police at the entrance on account of appearing suspicious. When the attackers attempted to flee, one was gunned down by a policeman and the other was arrested.

Pakistan has been hit by frequent sectarian violence in recent years, most of it perpetrated by hardline Sunni Muslim groups against minority Shia Muslims.
