In a crucial development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated probe in the Cambridge Analytica data theft of Indians from Facebook. "We have initiated a preliminary enquiry to look into data theft of Indians from Facebook by British firms CambridgeAnalytica and Global Science Research," said CBI.

A few days back, Minister of Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, had also told that CBI will look into the issue.

Sources have told India Today that the agency will be gathering evidence against Cambridge Analytica to file an FIR under the IT Act and other sections.

It has been alleged that data of Indians was stolen the social media site which is a violation of privacy rights, also user data was transferred without consent which is illegal. It has come to light that the data was used by Cambridge Analytica to influence Indian voters towards a particular party.

Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower who blew the lid on Cambridge Analytica gathering data from Facebook, had told the British parliamentary committee that the firm worked extensively in India.

Wylie also said that the firm was involved in all kinds of projects in India, including regionally, and their client was the Congress.

Wylie in a statement on Twitter in March this year also revealed that SCL Group, the parent organisation of Cambridge Analytica, has its office headquartered in Ghaziabad's Indirapuram and its regional offices in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Patna and Pune. "SCL/CA works in India and has offices there. This is what modern colonialism looks like," he had tweeted.
