Natural Ways to Prevent Heat Stroke

Heat stroke happens when a person is dehydrated and his or her body temperature increases to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or more. This is considered a medical emergency as it already killed several people due to brain damage and organ failure. Prevention is still always the best way to keep yourself safe from the sun's harm. You can avoid heat stroke by the following natural methods:

Know Your Risk: Although heat stroke can happen to anyone, there are people who are more at risk than others. These include those who are more than 65 years old, especially individuals who don't have air conditioning. Young children and babies are also more prone to heat stroke as well as pregnant and nursing mothers. If you have heart disease, lung disease, or high blood pressure, you should make sure you take the necessary steps to prevent heat stroke.

Stay Hydrated: Since heat stroke occurs when you get dehydrated, the best way to prevent it is to drink as much water as you can. This means that even if you are not thirsty, you should provide your body with water constantly. If you don't want water, there are other options, such as lemon water with honey. As long as it is non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic, you can safely hydrate yourself.

Avoid Some Beverages: You should stay away from caffeine and alcohol as they can act as a diuretic, meaning they cause the fluids to move out of the body quicker than normal. Stick to plain water if you need to drink.

Wear the Right Clothes: You should always dress according to the weather. If it is too hot outside, you should wear loose-fitting. Avoid clothes that are brightly-colored because they can absorb heat. Always choose cotton clothes, so your body can breathe without breaking a sweat.

Avoid Strenuous Activities: If it is too hot and you plan to stay outdoors for an hour or more, you should try not to participate in any intense activity, such as running. However, if there is no way for you not to get involved in such while under the sun, try to get as much break as you can, while drinking lots of water to refresh yourself.
