Coimbatore Government Hospital cures person with whole body skin peeling; Dean Nirmala praises team

A person was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital last month with skin peeling all over his body. His risk of death rate was 50-80 percent. However now, he is fully cured, free of cost under the Chief Minister's insurance scheme. The dean of the hospital, praised the doctors who helped save his life.


Coimbatore: Murugavel, 35, of Erisanampatti, Udumalaipettai, Tirupur district, was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital last month with skin peeling all over his body and is now fully recovered after 45 days of treatment.

Nirmala, the Dean, of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, said, “The disease is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. The disease is caused by pill allergies and bacterial infections. Red blisters appear on the body and then the skin peels off. Ulcers can also occur in the mouth and anus. As the skin peels off, other germs can infect and damage the internal organs.



The risk of death was 50 - 80%. He was treated under the Chief Minister's Insurance Scheme. Doctors and nurses admitted him to a separate intensive care unit and treated him with government drugs. He is currently returning home in good health.

The patient was treated at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital free of cost through the Chief Minister's insurance scheme. However, it costs around Rs.8 - 10 lakhs for the treatment at private hospitals.
