Foods That Hamper Memory And Cognitive Functioning

A well-balanced diet is a key not only for good health but also for good memory. However, nowadays, due to lifestyle changes and an improper diet, loss of memory is the common ailment that can be found in many.

Eating foods that are rich in saturated fats can lead to fat accumulation and an impaired memory power. Memory loss disrupts the daily life and could be a symptom of Alzheimer's disease. People who are a victim of amnesia have impaired ability to recall their past and events and they even find it difficult to learn new things.

Amnesia can be caused by a brain injury, stroke, brain inflammation, long-term alcohol abuse, tumours and seizures. A healthy diet is crucial because the food you eat can affect your brain and memory.

Phosphorous-rich foods like grapes, oranges and dates can help to recover memory. On the other hand, foods that are high in carbohydrates stimulate the toxins in the body and can impair the cognitive function of the brain.

Processed Cheese: Cheese is a great source of protein and calcium. Processed cheese like American cheese and mozzarella are high in saturated fats that are likely to build-up proteins and increase the risk of memory loss.

Processed Meat: Processed meat like bacon contains nitrosamines that cause liver to produce more fats, which can harm your brain. It also contains trans-fat that hamper the memory.

Tofu: Although tofu is considered as a healthy food for its high protein content, it also has certain ill effects if taken on a daily basis. According to a research, people who consume more amount of soy products like tofu are at a greaterrisk of dementia or memory loss when they get older.

Artificial Sweeteners: Adding artificial sweeteners in your daily diet results in adverse effects. Artificial sweeteners are associated with various ailments like headache, depression, weight loss, dizziness and memory loss.

White Foods: Foods such as white bread, sugar and pasta are high in carbohydrates and spike the blood sugar level. High sugar level is one of reasons of Alzheimer's disease. Hence, it is essential to
keep a check on blood sugar levels by avoiding these foods.

Beer: Men who drink two pints of beer a day are at a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease. According to a survey, men who consumed alcohol over a period of 20 years suffered from memory loss in the later part of their lives.Excessive drinking can damage the nerve cells, which in turn affects the cognitive functioning of the brain.
