1,500 government staff held for blocking road

As many as 1,500 employees working in various state government departments were arrested for staging a road block near the district collectorate here on Friday, demanding the government fulfil 20 demands.

They also announced that they would intensify their protest until the government agrees to fulfil the demands. This coming Monday, the families of the workers would also join them in their protest. "The state government introduced new pension plans for those employed by them after 2003.

As per the plan, the state government has been deducting 10 percent of staff salary for the last 12 years. The plan also calls for the government to contribute the same amount for each staff. However, the state failed to keep their end of the bargain.

Thus, we want the government to set up a separate body to monitor financial transactions," said D Sivajothi, state general secretary, Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials' Association. Accordign to him, more than two lakh staff were recruited after 2003 by the state government.

The Union government gives a substantial allowance towards house rent allowance (HRA) and conveyance. But the state government HRA allowance is meagre and they don't get an allowance for conveyance, said Sivajothi.

"We want equal pay system in the state. If an office assistant is employed with the Centre, he would get minimum pay of Rs 7,000 per month. But the state pays only Rs6,100," said Sivajothi.
