Following this, the district administration has issued a first level flood alert today. Around 4872 cusecs of water is flowing into the dam and once the water level in the dam reaches 69 feet, a final flood alert warning will be issued, say sources.
Since rains have subsided in Varusanadu and Vellimalai regions, the water level is expected to come down in a couple of days. Until then people living on the banks of Vaigai are adviced to stay safe and not to venture into the river for bathing or fishing.
Theni District Collector, M.Pallavi Baldev spoke to the press after issuing the flood alert when she said that the district administration is adequately prepared with disaster management team and relief material in case of an emergency.
