Coimbatore:The request to start a festival summer special night train from Mettupalayam/Coimbatore to Tiruchendur via Kinathukadavu, Pollachi has been acknowledged by the Railway Board.

The Railway Board has been presented with a proposal to conduct a tri-weekly special from Mettupalayam to Tuticorin, with primary maintenance at Tuticorin.

A proposal to connect the 16731/32 Palakkad Jn. — Tiruchendur Express at Pollachi Jn. in both directions by running a second pair of Coimbatore Jn. — Pollachi Jn. Passenger Special has been sent to Headquarters.

06030 Tirunelveli - Mettupalayam Weekly Special Train booking status (25/05/2023) via Tenkasi, Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Palani, Udumalaipettai-UDT, Pollachi-POY, Kinathukadavu-CNV, Podanur-PTJ, Coimbatore-CBE

The top three deboarding stations in the TEN MTP Special are the first CBE, second MTP, and third PLNI.

Passengers requested the railway authorities to increase the frequency of the Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam Express service from once a week to three times a week. More than 1000 passengers are traveling by this train tonight.

Commuters in the city have requested the southern railways to run trains from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam to Tiruchendur. They claim that trains on this line will not only benefit devotees travelling to Tiruchendur Murugan Temple, constitute the majority of the passengers but also provide a much needed link to South Tamil Nadu.

At present, there is an un-reserved Palakkad-Tiruchendur express, which is being operated via Pollachi. Hundreds of commuters from Coimbatore are obliged to travel to Pollachi to board this train to reach Tiruchendur and other destinations in the south. The Palakkad-Tiruchendur express departs from Pollachi at 6am and reaches Tiruchendur at 4pm. It returns back to Pollachi at 8pm.

K Jayaraj, a commuter said, people from Coimbatore take buses to reach Pollachi and catch this train, but it is difficult to get buses at night. The train was earlier operated between Pollachi and Tiruchendur before being extended to Palakkad. Commuters say patronage for this train service is only minimal at Palakkad. They are therefore requesting that the existing train service be extended to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam, or that a new route between Tiruchendur and Coimbatore or Mettupalayam be introduced.
