Commuters in the city have requested the southern railways to run trains from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam to Tiruchendur. They claim that trains on this line will not only benefit devotees travelling to Tiruchendur Murugan Temple, constitute the majority of the passengers but also provide a much needed link to South Tamil Nadu.
At present, there is an un-reserved Palakkad-Tiruchendur express, which is being operated via Pollachi. Hundreds of commuters from Coimbatore are obliged to travel to Pollachi to board this train to reach Tiruchendur and other destinations in the south. The Palakkad-Tiruchendur express departs from Pollachi at 6am and reaches Tiruchendur at 4pm. It returns back to Pollachi at 8pm.
K Jayaraj, a commuter said, people from Coimbatore take buses to reach Pollachi and catch this train, but it is difficult to get buses at night. The train was earlier operated between Pollachi and Tiruchendur before being extended to Palakkad. Commuters say patronage for this train service is only minimal at Palakkad. They are therefore requesting that the existing train service be extended to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam, or that a new route between Tiruchendur and Coimbatore or Mettupalayam be introduced.
