Coimbatore : Bringing much joy for the the train passengers from Coimbatore, the Southern Railways has announced to reintroduce the train service between Coimbatore and Rameswaram. The original Coimbatore-Rameswaram passenger which was halted for gauge conversion activity is now being planned to be operated from Coimbatore.
The MPs from the region recently submitted the petition for effective utilisation of the newly laid Coimbatore-Pollachi-Palani-Dindigul broad gauge line by reintroducing the trains that we once operating during the meter gauge era until 2008. This 121-km stretch has been newly laid and the MPs felt that it was severely under-utilised.

The Southern Railways have accepted the petition and has agreed to start operations of the new Rameswaram-Coimbatore-Rameswaram broad gauge train service within a tentative period of 90 days.
Earlier, the Rameswaram passenger helped people from Kongu region visit centres of pilgrimage like Palani and Rameswaram. The train route operated via Pollachi, Palani, Dindigul, Madurai and Manamadurai and Rameswaram.
Presently, the Palakkad–Tiruchendur and Madurai-Trivandrum Amrita Express are the other trains operated on this route.
This proposed train is tentatively planned to start at 10:30 PM from Coimbatore and reach the Rameswaram by 8 am, the following day.
