Farmers in and around Udumalpet have complained that they have incurred heavy losses due to the sale of tomatoes at Rs 3-5 per kg in the wake of the increase in the production of tomatoes.
Tirupur: Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 3 per kg in and around Udumalpet in Tirupur district, farmers said.
Agriculture is the main occupation in and around Udumalpet. The farmers here are more interested in cultivating vegetables. In particular, tomatoes and small onions are engaged in the cultivation of tomatoes and small onions in large numbers.
Vegetables grown in Udumalai and Madathukulam areas are brought to udumalai market daily for sale. From there, it is sent to other districts of Tamil Nadu and several parts of Kerala.

Tomato cultivation is a loss to the farmers most of the time. It is common practice to see a major fall in prices during periods of increase in production and disruption of production during periods of price rise.

Not only in Udumalpet, but also in other districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as other states including Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, tomato cultivation throughout the year has also been seen as the reason for the fall in prices.

It is an unaffordable price even for the cost of transportation and transportation. Farmers have been severely affected by this. If this situation persists, many farmers will have to give up agriculture and look for alternative employment.â€
